Calvin YEH
Max Planck Institute for the History of Science

Calvin Yeh (葉桂林) holds the position of IT Architect in the prestigious Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (MPIWG), Department III: Objects, Actions, and Knowledge. He has a rich professional background and is a skilled software developer in the finance and banking sectors. With his extensive experience across multiple industries, he brings valuable knowledge and skills to his current responsibilities.

At MPIWG, Calvin is a prominent figure who has made significant contributions to various digital humanities tools and projects: LoGaRT, CHMap, and Joseph Dennis' BIC (Books in China). These projects collectively form a series of initiatives centered around local gazetteers, with the overall goal of transforming printed materials into digitized academic databases. By digitizing and organizing these valuable resources, scholars have new avenues for digital historical analysis. This enables them to efficiently search, analyze, and gather data, ultimately contributing to addressing significant historical challenges in the field of Chinese history.

His involvement in LoGaRT, in particular, is irreplaceable, as he has undertaken the task of significantly improving the performance of Chinese full-text search functionality. Additionally, he actively participates in the refactoring of the existing monolithic architecture of LoGaRT, gradually transitioning it to a distributed architecture. This transformation aims to ensure the platform's increased reliability, scalability, and usability.

At present, Calvin is actively involved in multiple ongoing endeavors. These include projects such as "Common Knowledge and Its Origins in the Sinosphere from the 14th to the 20th Centuries”, "Fenye-Xingye in Local Gazetteers”, “Music in Tomb”, and the "Western Han Map" project at McGill University. Furthermore, he is investigating the incorporation of the Large Language Model in research concerning humanity.
